Mary Lou was born in Houston, Texas. Then moved to Ohio for a short time. The family then moved to Laredo, Texas until they relocated to South Central, Texas where she attended and graduated from Cotulla High School in 1959. While attending, she received the “Betty Crocker Award”.

She met and married her high school sweetheart Pedro Niaves Jr. (Pete).  Pete and Mary Lou were married 63 years. They settled in Palatine, Illinois where Mary worked as a special education school bus driver for over 20 years much to Pete’s surprise, because he didn’t want her to work when their children were little and be home with them. She got the job and told her husband, “I have a job, and I can be home with the kids!” Mary had three children, Pete, Nora and Mike. After retiring, they moved to Killeen, Texas 2018.

Mary did many extraordinary things in her life which included extensive traveling in Europe, Caribbean, South America, Mexico and through-out the United States. Mary was an avid collector of antiquities, especially books and miniatures.

Another one of her favorite things was spending time with the family, visiting, eating great food, and laughing. When she was recently asked by her kids, “Mom, what do you want to do, or go see?” She stated. “I’ve already done and seen what I have wanted to and am doing it. I’m spending time with my family.”

Mary accepted the Lord as her Lord and Savior when she was a young woman. She was a member of Palatine Bible Church. Mary Lou was extremely generous with her time and resources. She was a Deaconess and Sunday School teacher, prepared meals for others and would often lend an ear to listen. She also was the President of the PTA and worked at her children’s schools through-out their school years.

Mary Lou was an amazing wife, mother, daughter and friend.
